Well today I was raking my lawn when I noticed squirrels collecting acorns and such. I started to think acorns are basically seeds and must have carbs or good nutrition if squirrels eat them. So I decided to break open an acorn and feed the crushed insides to my ants. My Pheidole started dragging in chunks as soon as I dropped them in and began crushing them up inside the nest. I'm new to the forum and to ant farming as well. I ordered one of those antworks illuminated gel farms but i plan on giving that to my son. I have some big plans of my own and would appreciate your commentary.

First I want to build my own custom habbitat out of glass or plexi glass or something like that. I was thinking of a rectangle 2 feet wide, 1 foot high and an inch and a half deep( this may all change depending on your imput )

Second I liked the gel that ANTWORKS...

Hi,
Been reading around but cannot find much advise on how to start my ant colony.

I live in Australia (Victoria, Melbourne) and want to collect a queen ant.
Can someone tell me which flying queen species am I likely to find roaming the streets (that is common and easy to breed in my area)?
And what time of the year should I be looking?

Also I am quite easily able to lift a rock and find small black ants with wings, but last time I tried, none mated and none...

My cam can't get the ants :(
