A "How to" section? (What do you think?)

Folks,

I think the time has come for a "How to" sub-section of the forum to be written.
Personally, I think people should be forced to look through the form to find info. They undoubted learn from all the posts.
However, as this form/hobby grows in popularity we will be flooded with new enterprising individuals with question they will post.

The only way I see of preventing "repeat posts" is to create a "Anting Guide to the Galaxy"...

Since they are saying that the ants are basically one supercolony, why don't they introduce different family lines so they can at least control each other a bit and smaller colonies won't be able to raid and overrun native species as easily.

Glass terrarium questions

hello so i have a few questions about a terrarium to use for my ant farm.
1. should i use a Glass terrarium?
2. if not, shall i make my own out of Plexiglas?
3. if i should use a glass terrarium how can i drill holes for teh tubes into it without it cracking?

Im new to this forum and just thought id say hi! =)

I just caught 6 lasius niger queens in 2 days. I know very little about keeping/breeding ants.. but am very interested in them.
Two of my queens have just laid their first eggs and I am very excited about watching these ants forge their world.

I also wanted to know, how long will it take on average for these very new eggs to grow into workers?

Any negatives to using 100% calcium carbonate sand as a substrate as opposed to silica sand for harvester ants. Its the glow in the dark one too,it was on sale and found out after the fact that they don't recommend it for reptiles.

Am real keen to establish antfarm.
Started with having some large offcuts of 10mm acrylic and ply and have built was I think should be great accommodation 2ft x 1ft sub-terrain shaft and 2gal forage box, some vents and no poss of escape(I think!). I live in Norfolk in England. I was just wondering if anybody could help with my question. I saw an ant today the date being 21st November 2009. I was wondering if it is common to see an ant at this time of year. I heard a supersition that if you see an ant in winter it would mean death to all those in your house. And now i have seen an ant i am worried. Could anybody tell me if they have seen any ants.

I don't know if anybody has seen this but I found this on September 15. It are the protocols for working with ants in the laboratory. It includes subjects like collecting colonies, marking individual ants, ecological sampling, isotope analysis, fat extraction, brain and ovary-dissections, DNA isolation, JH and ecdysteroid extraction, JH assays, techniques for identification of semiochemicals and linkage mapping in ants.
