This ant occurs across the northern half of the USA and possibly in southern Canada. It seems to require relatively pristine woodland-grassland edge or open woodland habitats. It is nowhere common, so is not often encountered. I have observed three localized Missouri populations of this species apparently go extinct during my 20 plus years here, and have encountered only a couple of others. These photos were all taken from the same spot, most at macro setting and one with maximum wide angle, using an Olympus Stylus 720 SW point-and-shoot digital camera. "Large" is a relative term.

I was visiting old stomping grounds and saw a low ant mound, about a hand's breadth across, on an ill-kept lawn. I assumed it was a fire ant mound.
