Young Worker Ant Posts: 28 07/05/2012 7:38 PM	Hi! My entire post was deleted so lets start again! I decided to make a whole new thread just dedicated to this ant rather than plague up the forum with multiple posts of how excited I am about my ants! A few days ago I noticed that my giant larvae were moving (totally awesome as I have never seen them move before) and the next day they were all, save one, pupae! My last larva is super big and will pupate any day now I think. My queen had laid a whole slew of eggs, but today I noticed that she had eaten most of them, which brings me to a question I wanted to ask... When my nanitics eclose, what should I start feeding them? Will they be OK on a diet of mostly fruit and chicken or turkey? Or do they prefer darker meat like ground beef? I was thinking maybe grabbing some pin head crickets as well, but I don't know if anyone sells them around here. I also recently discovered an ants nest in my backyard, would it be fine to pick a few larvae from there and freeze them before feeding? I plan on feeding them more crickets and meal worms when there are more of them, but this is just for now. I was also wondering how many workers I should wait for before I start trying to move them into a nest? I have one being made right now by mordam (totally stoked for it to arrive!) and in the case that it does arrive before I have a whole tube full of ants I was just wondering about that. I'm fine with leaving them in there, I'm just scared they will run out of room if they are anything in size like my queen is. Thanks for everyone's support so far, I'm totally stoked that she seems to be happy and healthy and I hope she doesn't spontaneously die like my last nanitic producing queen did. As you can see on the cocoons, your nantics will be quite small, so they have plenty of room for the next few months I’d say. I don’r really think you need to feed them right away. Most ants won’t leave the nest to hunt before their numbers grow. But of course you would like to feed them like most of us anyway. J You never know what they like, but a few ant larvae or a small insect and some sugar water or honey would probably be fine. I was looking around and apparently stores around here don't even sell pinheads. So I'm definitely glad that the other colony's larvae would be an acceptable solution. I'll be going out to collect some today I think to freeze for later. If I freeze them how long can I keep them in the freezer before they go bad? (Also sorry antdude! I thought I got them all!)

She had laid a whole slew of eggs and the one egg from the previous picture has pupated! However, why is it taking so long for these pupae to eclose? Is this normal? The last time I posted a picture was in the beginning of June, more than a month ago, and my three original pupae are still pupae as well as the fourth that spun its cocoon the day after those pictures were taken. From what I've heard, it takes Camponotus a long time to go from egg to worker. So, based on previous accounts, I'll say that this is normal. But, I've never raised Camponotus before so I'm sure someone with more experience with this genus could help. Current location: Northeast North Dakota, USA. My YouTube Channel

Young Worker Ant Posts: 28 07/19/2012 7:32 PM	My first two nanitics eclosed! Just in time, my formicarium from mordam just got in too, I'll have pictures of that tomorrow hopefully. I got to see the queen pull the first nanitic out of her cocoon and I watched her twitch until she was able to walk, it was fascinating! This is very shortly before she started to walk: I caught the second nanitic just as I came in the door from work today and she was just taking her first few steps. She's almost up and about now. Here's a better picture of the younger one (front) and her older sister. You can see the size difference in their gasters as the younger one hasn't eaten yet! For now, as the bugs I caught are now looking a little too large, I gave them a little bit of raspberry jam until I have time to go root out some smaller flies. I'm just so excited! I'll try moving them into the formicarium when all my current pupae are hatched. Also, does anyone else have queens that like to pile up everything and then sit on it all night like a chicken? It was really amusing to see her do this with the nanitic that eclosed yesterday, the poor thing was trying to walk but the queen just kept sitting on her. Edited 1 time by Jumoh 07/19/2012 7:48 PM.
