Henchant Posts: 1037 07/31/2012 6:31 AM	I won't say they're Pheidole tysoni, can't be sure without experts doing some research or something. As to where I found them, I live in Penang, Malaysia, and found them in my house, near white fluorescent lights, they're quite attracted to it and you can find them on the floor and walls surrounding the light. They're quite common here, I can find a few of them if I look on the floor at night after rains in the morning/afternoon. Much more if I search outside. Sorry if I dissapointed you with the place I live, Jim! Update. I tried to take get the minor/major ratio as said by Nuno, but I'm afraid it can't be accurate. They minors are too active! But I'm sure there are around 27 majors in there when I counted yesterday, with around 3 more in pupae form, around 4 of the majors eclosed in the last few days. As for the minor worker count, the rough estimate is 200 workers(probably less), and increasing fast, probably around 300 by the end of the year. Nothing much to say about the colony, just took a few pictures and you can see a major pupae in the bottom left of the brood pile in picture 1 and 2. 3rd picture is of the larvae on the wall of a chamber. Also, I'm uploading a new video, where you can see the brood and the colony feeding on a piece of raw meat! Thanks for reading.

Henchant Posts: 1037 08/07/2012 6:40 AM	Very small update. So this colony is doing great! I'm sure there are more than 200 workers. And as of yesterday, the major workers count is around 31. End of update. No picture. OK, sorry for this, but the 2nd term test is coming next week, and I'm now studying at the school library from 8.00a.m. until 11.30a.m. and come back home at around 6.45p.m. I'll then bath, eat, do homework, go online for an hour, then study and sleep. So yeah, busy schedule. I'll update this journal once the test is finish and the one week holiday comes! Thanks for reading.

Henchant Posts: 1037 08/16/2012 6:49 AM	Test is finish! One week holiday! The colonies doing excellent! I provided them with a big lid of a cup, to put sugar water in. They drink from it anytime they wish, and I see a few of them drinking from it from time to time. Unfortunately I couldn't get a decent picture of them drinking it, partly due to their size, but mostly because I couldn't get the hang of lighting yet. Anyway, the numbers doesn't seem to increase much, at least not noticeable by me. There are tons of brood in the usual pattern - eggs and pupae in one chamber with the queen, larvae on the wall of another chamber. There are at least 35 majors in there, and almost all of the pupae now will probably eclose this week! I'll be updating this journal with lots of pictures during this one week. There is one interesting thing going on right now. As you can see in some previous pictures, the main chamber, the one with eggs, pupae and queens, are just beneath the entrance with a short tunnel joining them. They closed the entrance with bits of plaster, dust and dog hair, which fall into their open top foraging area. Every time I see the things accumulating, I'll use a forcep/tweezer to pull the whole ball of plaster, dust and dog hair out. They don't seem to mind that. But recently, they've filled the entire short tunnel with bits of plaster which they dug out. Quite interesting actually, I'll get pictures this week. Here are a few pictures which I took a few days before the test. I'll get pictures of them now and the big plastic lid. Thanks for reading!

Henchant Posts: 1037 08/17/2012 7:04 AM	Picture spamming! Great picture showing a small part of the pupae pile. A worker carrying a soon eclosing pupa and a newly eclosed worker carrying a pupa. Workers + brood. Minor worker + brood + major workers. Workers and brood. I still don't know what that 'blob' is beside the small larvae in the bottom middle. Could it be major worker pupa head? Random shot of a worker. Majors and minors. The 2 entrance. The smaller one made by my brother... ( He used a stick to poke a hole there, annoying thing is that the ants prefer that entrance... ) Majors + minors + some brood. Almost the whole colony, minus some brood in another chamber, and all the major and minor workers throughout the nest and foraging area. Again, some majors and minors and brood. A queen in a chamber. See those brown specks? They're the stuff eaten by the larvae. That's all! I'm getting tired...

As usual, the worker count is increasing steadily every day, not very noticeable since I watch them everyday. I gave them a few spiders I found in the house, which they devour in a few hours, disposing the remains in the trash pile in a chamber. They eat quite fast, which leads me to thinking I don't feed them enough, I'll be giving them more food from now on. Pictures : Brood, minor and major workers. One of the queens with some brood and workers. The other queen, in another tunnel with some brood and workers. Another big chamber, where they stick all their larvae on the wall. There's always workers tending the larvae and majors guarding them. Both of the queens in a chamber with their brood and workers. Thanks for reading and hope your enjoyed the pictures.

Henchant Posts: 1037 08/24/2012 6:40 AM	Update. Today, I finally started my mealworm culture/farm. I immediately froze 2 mealworms for around 3 minutes. I gave one mealworm to this colony, and they found it very fast, swarmed all over it in one minute. The mealworm I gave this colony came back alive after a few minutes, wriggling it's tiny legs with the ants all over them. Thinking the mealworm might kill my ants, my dad made a small hole in the mealworm, a little below the head. After that, the mealworm still seemed alive, but was weak and could only fling it's tail/end once in a while, flinging some unexpected workers away. At first, some kind of juice came out of the wound, which the ants drank away. Now, the ants are swarming the small hole, biting whatever they can. I'll see how they're doing tomorrow morning. Depending on how fast they consume the insides of the mealworm, I might give them 1 every day. Also, I might try microwaving the next pair. No pictures today, the school holidays coming to an end soon, and I'm busy doing my homework ( I'm a do-everything-at-the-last-minute kind of boy ).
