So as some of you may know, I have finally caught a queen ant! (woo!) however, what pretty well all of you DON'T know is that I recently caught two more!! (WOO!!) I believe they are all of the genus formica, and likely the species Formica fusca.
Anyways, I have a few questions.
I have had two of the queens for about 6 - 7 days now, and just caught another one yesterday.
I leave them in my closet but make sure the door is open so they have sunlight (NOT DIRECT). I do this so they get used to the day/night light cycle -- I read a thread on how ants react to this cycle, and it has no adverse effect on egg laying. I always find myself observing them, maybe 6 or 7 times per day, and I'm not sure how much they like that. I don't even touch them (or the test tubes they're in), I just open the door slightly more (the door slides, it's not a walk in closet, if that helps you get an idea of where they're placed). I occasionally pick up the test tubes for maybe 10 seconds then put them back, but would that be considered disturbing them? Is the different amount of light affecting their attitude in any way?
The queen that I caught yesterday was doing really well until recently, she just started tugging at the cotton! I'm sort of worried about that.
I don't know exactly what I'm getting at, I just really want them to lay eggs and none of them have done so thus far Does anybody know what I might be doing wrong? Or what I can do to make the egg laying process faster (aside from heating up the room, since that isn't really an option)?
Usually how long will it take for a queen ant to lay eggs after I captured her? Is it normal that none of them have laid eggs yet?
