I've only moved two colonies out of test tubes ever (some ~20 worker colonies still in test tubes). The first colony, I believe I moved into a formicarium that's too large since they occupy only 20% of the chambers, use 40% for trash and leave the remaining untouched. The second colony didn't even bother leaving the test tube once I put it in a new tank+plaster setup. I'm guessing they're still fine with the space the test tube offers. Assuming they'll need more space soon as it is a 2 queen Solenopsis geminata colony.
I've been wondering how different people manage their formicarium changes. When do you decide a colony is ready to be moved out of their test tube? Do you have steps between test tube setup to your planned final formicariums? Or do you block off chambers with sand/dirt to leave it to the ants to decide when they want more space? It would be great to hear how different people deal with moving out of a test tube setup.
