I have a rather large ant colony in my back yard (Argentine, I believe. Definetly not fire ant, I can say that much.) and I was wondering how do I take the queen from it and place it into my own Ant Formicarium (From Tar Heel Ants, if you're wondering)?
I noticed the queen wasn't very far deep, as I've seen her before when I dug around but she was too fast for me. I also noticed that the larva and eggs are only about five inches or so deep, inside the mound. I had assumed it would have been much deeper. Anyway, is it safe for me to remove the queen from the colony? Obviously not for the colony, but my dad is going to kill the mound anyways so I might as well save the queen if I can.
So, the main questions are, how do I remove the queen safely from the colony, will she continue to lay eggs, and do I still need to put her in a test tube setup, or can I just put her in my formicarium straight away?
