I found a rather young colony of what I think is a Camponotus ligniperdus. I only say this species as their is only two species known to be found where I live. One is the more common Camponotus ligniperdus and not the less found Camponotus herculeanus that is found in higher altitudes. Both are about the same looking just the Camponotus herculeanus is darker then C. ligniperdus. The colony I found was lighter red thorax with black head and gaster. There was about 100 workers that I could see and 30-40 brood. But I could not see the queen and as I have nothing to put the colony in at the moment I put the branch/log back. Now all I need is to get some glass and tubeing and glue them in place let it cure and go back before it gets to warm to capture the colony. Then carfuly take the branch/log apart and try to coax them into the formicarium. And then I have my first colony in Germany. Not to say it will be my first colony just first one here. I will update when I have more information.
