Length: 8 or 9 mm
Elevation: 2,200 ft
Location caught: The wall of my living room in Big Santa Anita Canyon in Angeles National Forest, Southern California.
Habitat: Cement block house in oak and chapparal forest. I watched the nuptial flight of one of the two colonies inhabiting our roof about a month ago.
Notes: I kid you not, I found this ant on my living room wall while I was watching TV. My cat perked up and was obviously looking at something, so I looked too. There was this ant crawling on the wall above the couch. I thought it was a worker ant, but the more I look at it, it's awfully plump to be a worker. I think I can see wing scars in the fifth picture. Can you identify my TV watching ant for me? Oh yes, these pictures are the best I can do.
