Collected in the Clear Lake area South of Houston. Minor workers are 4-6 mm, major workers are 7-9 mm. Approximately. My specimens have been in alcohol for some time and don't want to straighten out. I suspect these are a species of formica ant. I see them 2-4 times a year. They forage and trail readily and heavily during the day, along sidewalks and the open ground. I have found them nesting in old fences in the 4X4 support posts. Down between where the 2X4's meet on top. I presume it had rotted out there. They look and seem very similar to carpenter ants based on behavior, except for the daytime part and trailing activities, of course.
