My five year old daughter spotted this 'Mommy ant' on our way into the eye doctor’s office today. (I've found my both my daughters show much more interest when I talk about Mommy ants and sister ants, instead of queens and workers.)
I'm pretty confident she is a Camponotus nearcticus queen, but I wanted to make sure since this is the first queen of this species I've found. We found her around 4 pm in Cincinnati Ohio on the sidewalk by a small parking lot in a busy commercial area near a major express way. There is a little green space around some of the business with a few mature trees. She is 10 mm long and seems more elongated then the bulky Camponotus queens I'm used to.
