One of my second year Camponotus castaneus keeps devouring its own brood! As of this week they must have ripped open a total of 12 cocoons and ate the pupae. Right now they have about 30 pupae left. I give them crickets and mealworms and honey water very often, and they only ever touch the honey water most of the time. I figure that they are devouring the pupae to fulfill some protein need, but they have the cut up insects given to them every other day. Could it be that they are devouring these cocoons because there's something wrong with them? ALL of them?
