How a small interview with Dr. B. Seifert (http://www.bild.de/regional/chemnitz/ameisen/invasion-der-killer-ameisen-37460718.bild.html ) can have so big effects in the ant-world (http://www.ameisenforum.de/neues-aus-medien-wissenschaft/52768-deutschlands-f-hrender-ameisen-experte-der-bild-zeitung.html and http://www.ameisenportal.eu/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=665&sid=b1ae3745062b4955659df5cf93a19a37 ). It’s very compact, you read it in a few minutes and when you read it, it is perfectly clear that it are quotes, taken on separate moments and thrown together. Dr. Seifert talked two hours with two reporters and most is left out of the news story. The remarks in the story only concern the transport of exotic ants with plants,… from other places in the world to Germany and the effect they can have on native ants. This lead to some escalating reactions against Prof. Dr. A. Buschinger, Dr. B. Seifert and to scientists in general. And for me this is going too far. First they use this very fragmentary peace against Prof. Dr. A. Buschinger because Dr. B. Seifert didn’t mention (in the published story) the selling and transport of exotic ants as a potential danger for native ants. They also take the opportunity to put the professor in a bad light and even question his capabilities. Later, Dr. B. Seifert, in reaction to a few remarks about what his thoughts about this problem could be, logs in on Ameisenforum, says a few things about the interview and, also, gives his thoughts. He also says that he normally doesn’t frequent forums, facebook and twitter but for once he does so but he likes to talk to others when he knows their name and via email and other more personal ways. Because this answer about his meaning about traffic and the ways he normally communicates isn’t the way they want, Dr. Seifert also becomes a “bad” person and they start to give all sorts of bad comments about both scientists. It even goes so far that one of the participants in the discussion says that ant-researchers don’t have any use for society, are troublemakers and only bring troubles in the quiet, peaceful amateur ant-keepers forums. It’s terrible. Two of our respected myrmecologists are attacked because they, the amateur ant-keepers, don’t like what science shows! Science tells nothing to them, it doesn’t matter how an ant is called, all the good observations about ants are made by amateurs and science is only a big nuisance! I protest against this! Myrmecology is important and Prof. Dr. A Buschinger and Dr. B. Seifert need to be respected for their important work!!!
One small point: In America, one says, they don’t care about ant traffic and they do what they want. He clearly doesn’t know how strict the legal rules are in the U.S.A.
Second point: The discussions are in German, so for most of you a translator program would be helpful.
Third point: I post this comment also on the German forums so Ameisenforum will probably ban me from their forum!
