I was out collecting some Camponotus colonies and noticed about 6 or so of these ants with little fungal growths sprouting from the backs of their heads. Many of you have probably heard of this phenomenon where the fungus Ophiocordyceps unilateralis infects an ant and changes its behavior, then kills it and uses the body for food. Well, I guess it has been only recently described in the USA. I don't think anyone knew this happened in Missouri before. I'm in contact with a researcher on the topic.
