Hello guys! It's been a while since I've posted anything but was encouraged to do so after a rather strange occurrence I witnessed the other day. I was checking the mail and stumbled across a very young nest in my garden. I noticed an ant species I hadn't otherwise seen or identified and went to observe them. Upon further inspection I had realized I had never seen them before and tried to pick one up so I could observe it better. I grabbed the nearest leaf and tried to scoop up the little guy and was astonished when it dropped dead! I thought I killed the little guy(or should I say girl?) and was extremely confused. I had not asserted anywhere near the amount of pressure needed to kill it and I didn't squish it either. I simply scooped up the dirt under its feet with a leaf and it dropped dead. I had no explanation, so I set down the "dead" ant and to my surprise it got up again! I was tricked by an ant! The ant was playing dead or maybe it was in shock? I don't think ants go in to shock so what could this have been? Have you guys ever observed such a crazy behavior as playing dead in ants? I have never heard of such a defense mechanism in ants, but maybe I am ill informed. I know how crazy this post may seem but please bare with me! I would not post a thread to simply embarrass myself. So my question to you is so - Have you ever witnessed an ant "play dead"?
