My son happened to come across this little bugger in our front drive way, which he thought was a type of wasp. We have a Lasius niger nest in our front driveway so I assumed It was from there, I picked up some of the workers and put them in with the queen but one of them decided to start biting her legs so I got the workers out of there fast.
Hopefully some of you experts could help me confirm if this is a queen and of which species:
Collected: Edinburgh, Scotland. 15 August 2016
Habitat: Permeable paved driveway.
Colouration: Looks very dark, Jet black and is rather shiny. Colour seems very uniform,
Size: Approx. 10mm long.
Thanks guys. Hoping to start a new colony for my son if its a queen!
