Posts: 39 01/25/2002 11:05 PM	well if fluon is a bad thing and causes high death toll and is bad for you and your ants... then what do you use to keep ants from getting out the terrarium??? I have a fishtank. would a magnit cover be more effective than floun. maybe a plexiglass magnit cover with holes on top? any ideas. thanks, Thomas , new to this, but tring really hard, Huber [revised the title] --antdude

Posts: 527 01/26/2002 7:45 AM	i don't think that fluon is very dangerous. specially when fluon is dried it is no problem. just do not put it on your cigarette! because of the polymer fever which is quite nasty i can tell you. no ant died until now because of fluon. fluon is used a lot in laboratories to keep ants in the container! kuene More Images on this Board. krungkuene.org/ameisen_page/intro.html

Posts: 4541 01/26/2002 9:10 AM Soldier Ant and Doc.	I have a friend in Arizona that has well in excess of a hundred colonies of various Sonoran Desert ants species. All the containers they are in are treated with fluon. To my knowledge he has never had a colony failure which can be attributed to it's use. However in time it will wear down and have to be reapplied. This occurs faster in colonies of large or just very populous colonies from the wear created by their little claws trying to get a grip on the stuff so they can make their escape. I highly recommend it's use, esp over any sort of lid, it seems they always find away around whatever you use. Posts: 5364 01/26/2002 6:41 PM Doc.	Fluon is very useful for containing ants, and can be used safely. Apply it with good ventilation (near a vent fan or outside), avoid the fumes while it's wet or drying, and wash any that gets on your hands or skin off thoroughly. Most important, never get it near a flame. Though it's not very flammable, the fumes from burning it are quite toxic.
