Take a moment and stare at this picture. There are no ants that I know of. It's a simple photograph of a common blue stone. I took it while anting and
thought nothing of it until I started staring at it. Something similar to a psychologists showing inkblot seemed to stir up thoughts in me. I found I've
been looking for ants long enough that simply looking at this was enough to make me feel curiosity. I'd like to know if simply looking at this is enough to
make that little voice in your head want to see what's under it. This isn't a question of self control. I want to know if you've conditioned
yourself enough that you want to see what's under it.

I used to do this all the time. I just hate it when I find something else like worms, slugs, snails, etc.

I wouldn't lift this particular rock just because it doesn't look very promising. It looks like it has too much space underneath it for ants to want to
live there. Also, doesn't look like its been there very long either, so prolly mostly just dead grass with some worms or something under it. I'd bet at
most Tetramorium workers and brood (almost never ever seem to find the queen for Tetramorium underneath a rock regardless of how much of the colony appears to
be there).
Anything else that does look promising though, I can't keep away from it. I've found that since moving to Washington D.C. for the summer everytime I find a rotting log at least some of the bark needs to come off of it. Today I found Myrmica and some stag beetle looking things as well as termites and some Lasius. |

Hi Milta,
Reacker is right. Your slab looks as if it had been overturned a short time before! So no "good" ants to be expected, I would not keep it worth to be taken up. In addition, it has been somebody with little respect for ants and other creatures who had lifted the rock: He should have put it back exactly into its previous position. It needs months or even years until such a rock will be attractive again for the rarer and more interesting ant species. That's my experience over decades of ant-hunting!

I wouldn't think about it as much as Reacker and abuschinger did, I'd just flip it, replace, and move on
.

For some reason it would just eat away at me that maybe by some chance a queen settled under there.

I found my Lasius emarginatus queen under a rock like this

Even knowing better, I'd probably check it. Invasive or disturbance-tolerant ants may be found under such rocks, such as Tetramorium species E or
Tapinoma sessile, respectively.

It's neat to see not only are you all voting Yes but you're speculating what is under it.

Not exactly what is under this particular rock, but what could be under a rock that looks like this.

I always look under the rocks when I have the chance. I do not do it with the neighbours, but simply to avoid think I'm crazy.

My neighbors probably think I'm nuts :-) I spend a lot of time crouched over in my yard, and I always have my home-made pooter on me. The kids in the
nieghborhood look like they'd like to come over and ask questions (which I would love to answer, I think they'd be interested), but I'm always
accompanied by a 65-lb Dalmation (known to the ants as Gojirro). Fear of lawsuits makes me keep my distance.
