I've been wondering about how long will a Queen survive within a test tube that has a wet cotton ball? How do they get the air they need?

Note that as soon as your queen has her first workers you need to feed the new colony even though they are still in the tube. I wouldn't suggest moving
them from the tube just because this is a fragile time for a colony and you want to disturb them as little as possible. When feeding in a test tube, it is
essential that you don't add anymore food than the colony can and will eat within 24 hours. Anything excess must be removed or it will start to mold up or
breed bacteria which will kill your colony. Bacteria is especially bad as it likes to kill the brood slowly and seemingly mysteriously while all the time
leaving you confused as to why your colony is dying for no apparent reason.
That said, test tube nests are the easiest and most maintenance free setups you can make, just make sure to keep them clean. |

Thanks for the info,
Though how would I clean the tube without letting the colony out? Or by the time it needs to be cleaned I can just put them into their new home? What kind of food should I use for them? And off topic are there any games online or single player that has ants amongst other things than Sim Ant? Or just wait for Spore ^_^?

this game sounds interesting! is it free? I am a wasp enthusiast and have been looking for a game for some years now that lets you be a wasp that starts a
colony and you would have to go through the whole colony cycle. but, there is no such game unfortunatly and this game sounds close! can you simply download it
and then play it?

Vulgaris wrote: If you can find it. It's very old. You can probably download it from some abandonware site. More info.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SimAnt ... Empire of the Ants was a newer game, but not so good. There are discussions
about these two games on this forum. Search them.

So I have one of those stand up ant farms that you can see through, I remember seeing my red ant queen (not sure which species, possibly Fire) dug herself a
hole and then covered up the hole, its been about 3 weeks now and I'm thinking it has died? Or does it take longer than 3 weeks for her babies to hatch?
Also yes I love spore, I can't wait just two more months to go ^_^ Made a couple ants myself but not sure how good or anatomically correct they are >_< |

Well generally it takes about a month or two for the eggs to hatch so just hang in their ;], and you say she dug a hole in the sand the covered up the hole?
hmm i dont know why she would do that??

lol, no, im thinking she wanted a little, damp burrow. I am no expert or anything, but maybe shes doing that to have a humid place for the eggs to hatch, and
once the first worker hatches, he will dig himself out of the burrow and begin foraging. Mind you that I just guesstimating ;] This has never happened to me
before :/

Haha I see, I try to keep the ant farm pretty damp or humid, I refill the cotton balls every 3-4 days. Looks like its pretty humid in there since the water
vapors are filling the sides of the farm.
