Episode 9: Ants Waking Up
On this show I talk about ant colonies waking up for the new year, why it's a great time to catch young colonies, and I go over the ethics of catching colonies. There is also a brief 6 minute segment on the garden last year but I assure you it's fascinating. Also there isn't much I can do about the slight hissing sound but if you adjust the volume it becomes less noticeable. I am looking into buying a better microphone. |

Episode 10: Ant
Plant Interactions
I know I've been harping this for the past couple of .... years so I finally did a show on it. After reading "The Ecology and Evolution of Ant-Plant Interactions," by Victor Rico-Gray & Paulo S. Olivera I decided to show some examples of observations and things they mention in the book. "This isn't a review, the book was fantastic, you should read it." I am aware of this spelling error and that some of my examples aren't really what the book example shows but they do demonstrate the ant behavior. This episode wasn't really rushed, it's just I've been busy the past week and it takes a good couple of hours to do one of these shows. Uploading it also takes forever and I'm considering a few audio only episodes. |

Just an audio show because I don't have enough pictures of everything, and you really don't need images of sugar water, crickets, and seeds anyhow. |

Episode 12 Ants Mating and Colonies Moving
Right after I deleted the last 1/3rd of the audio which I felt was irrelevant the monitor window in Adobe Premiere crashed on me. So I couldn't see anything of what I was editing. Thankfully the show was pretty much done. However there are a few spelling errors, an alternate wordy title, and two photos over lapping that I was unable to fix. In the interest of putting an episode out I wasn't going to start over. So I am sorry for these errors but I fell it's still watchable and perhaps one of the better shows I've done. |

Episode 13 Honey Bee Cut
Out
Not much going on with ants so that's restricted to a segment at the beginning. Mostly what's flying now, what I'm catching, and so on. The highlight of this show is a segment at the state beekeeper's meeting where a 6 week old hive was removed from a fake wall. THIS IS NOT A HOW TO EPISODE! Don't do this! This is not a training show! What this man does to make money is a lawsuit waiting to happen but mostly the law looks the other way because he's the only person for miles that's willing to deal with bees. The hive itself inside of a home is a fire hazard and it's a lot better for a home owner to have it removed instead of killing the bees and leaving your walls sugar coated. Something not mentioned in the episode is that he works inside of homes (or has the home owner rent a nematic lift for him to use,) and he doesn't use smoke to calm the bees. A lot of older homes have had seeds and tons of things die in their walls and it only takes one cinder to light the home up! |

Episode 14 Ant Subfamilies of North America
Just a minor mistake I noticed. I have the word "(Sub)family" written like that because "subfamilies" are usually not listed when writing out the whole Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species thing. But in ants we have Subfamilies. Just know that all Ants are in the Family Formicidae and below this we have Subfamilies where you find all the Genera and Species in them. Other then that though I believe everything should be spelled correctly (for once) and has a lot of good info. Most of which you can already read here. |

Episode Fifteen: Product Reviews and Selling Out | #53 | ||

Episode Fifteen: Product Reviews and Selling Out
Not the best show I've recorded. I apologist about the popping sounds. It's also a little hard to know what I'm talking about as it's not a video episode. Basically I "review" the Wild Science's ANTlantis ant farm (pictured below) and sort of talk about their Ant Mine farm too.
I'm happy to say the foraging area works, once the ants get established they do use the tubes to get onto the islands. However, my cat likes using it as a water dish. There is a cover for this though. On the down side I've found 2 workers drown in the water already. They're smart about walking around the edge but one slip and they're in the drink. Ants are hardy though so simply removing the seemingly dead ants from the water where they can dry out revives them back to life within a few hours. People who don't know this though might have a lit of dead ants though. Even so this is still the closest product I've found that works well as keeping a colony alive. I don't believe in number scores but do point out facts as they stand. The reason for this is if a future ant farm comes out with some new dimension to of rating it (special feature) then it makes all the previous scores obsolete. For example some movies are now available at the theater in 3D which is a whole other dimension for them to suck. You can only throw so much stuff at the audience. The second half of the show is somewhat easier to listen to as I just go over products in the newly opened Ant Chat Store. There is an Ant Farm section where the ANTlantis and Ant Mine setup can be found. The are also a number of gel farms and I need to specify though they're novelty items only. If you buy a gel farm I highly recommend sending away for the Harvester Ants and watching them dig. Gel farms don't have enough nutritional value for a queen ant or brood to develop, and it's such a foreign environment eggs are usually discarded among the bits of gel. |

As if I haven't started enough topics on this species this week here's a full episode somewhat devoted to them. I do talk about sunflowers and ants at one point, as well a 3D Plaster Setup I made.

Can you put oil in the dish? I don't think your cat will drink water with a small layer of oil of it.
If I had a wish I'd wish to be an ant.
