Young Worker Ant Posts: 43 06/12/2009 6:38 AM	Hello, I don't know if it's their time of flying but I caught a winged odorous house ant (I'm sure it's one since I caught it by its wings and when I smelled my finger, it smells awful. don't know how to describe it) Anyway, it's night time (around 9:35 so the entire house is dark, except for the monitor of my laptop) I caught it when it bumps again and again in the middle of my screen when I am viewing a shota site. Anyway, the color is black... I'll give accurate description tomorrow (including a measurement) EDIT: I think it's a male, so I'm releasing it. Anyway, it's 7cm in length and has an elongated abdomen. I only had a good view just now after waking up.... TAFMF Addict Posts: 3667 06/12/2009 8:22 PM	Ants that flew today here in New Jersey, USDA growing zone 6, Hot and Humid all day but got only lightly more hospitibal around 11pm. In the mid afternoon Tapinoma sessile. At late afternoon to night fall: Lasius interjectus (or L. umbratus, I'm still identifying right now, it just seems odd that L. interjectus is still having strong nuptial flights.) Camponotus castaneus, and Camponotus pennsylvanicus. Possably still going on but alates have definantly slowed. At night around 11:00pm (right now!) Tetramorium species E, formerly caespitum. Henchant Posts: 1833 06/19/2009 1:48 PM Strong Worker Ant	Monomorium ergatogyna have been having their...well can't really call it a mating flight, since they bud out, like Argentine ants. But they have been mating the past month. Argentine ants have been mating here in Southern california for about a month or two now. Keep seeing males outside their nests that are dying off.

Colonies that nest near lights tend to fly close to midnight (I think) while others will begin closer to when the sun rises. Queens can usually be found during the before noon hours. Check under rocks and logs and objects with contact to the soil. If you have or know anyone who owns a pool, check it daily for queens. These ants are somewhat notorious when it comes to swimming pools. There's no guarantee that they're mated with but you can dry them out, though they may appear dead, and try your luck that way. Spider webs near lights at night can also be checked to indicate if a flight happened but rarely produce live ants. ...The only ants the queens might look like otherwise are the males of the species. Male Tetramorium tend to be roughly the same size as the queen but have a very diminished head. Jackpot! I found about a dozen queens stuck to the morning dew on cars near where I live this morning. Some of them have already dropped their wings. [location: Marlborough, Mass. approx. 42d20'40"N 72d29'40"W] Thanks so much, the advice really payed off. With some observation (of the activity in the local nests), a little patience, and your advice, I knew exactly which morning I needed to get up early and look. Henchant Posts: 1833 06/29/2009 10:34 AM Strong Worker Ant	Tapinoma sessile have started mating recently (within past few days), here in Southern California. At least...I think they are. No winged ants, but I see a lot of queens and workers budding out to new areas. In urban areas, T.sessile turn into an "invasive" ant, and get huge colonies. In urban areas, they are sort of like Argentine ants, where I assume...they mate underground, and take workers and go to new areas to colonize. Thats what I saw going on yesterday. I live about 5 minutes away from the beach (15 minute drive, but their is a lagoon, so have to drive around it. If it wasn't there, it would only be 5 minutes to get to). Speaking of that...I've never seen one winged T.sessile around here, and they all get huge colonies and act like Argentine ants. I haven't ever seen any males from their species either. At least the only ant T.sessile attack are Argentine ants, they don't kill the native ants.

I know it happens in the late afternoon hours, and I've actually seen it happen on weeks where there was no rain what so ever and the ground was dry as can be. So I assume queens will try to nest in wood. Keep an eye on your colonies, usually they don't start flying until most of the alates are born and very few pupa remain in the nest. Minor Worker Ant Posts: 126 07/07/2009 11:27 AM	Last night, there was a nice little group in the chatroom , and apparently there was a sighting of Lasius alienus. Well, I checked very early outside today for any sign of an L. alienus nuptial flight. I checked spiderwebs, pools of water, under rocks, etc. and I found none. So I guess I can report that L. alienus did not fly yet in my general location in Northern VA, but you never know...

When I got home I found queens taking off around colonies in my yard. They nest in or around dead wood as well the soil under it. Colonies can be spaced out over a series of locations. TAFMF Addict Posts: 3667 07/13/2009 4:05 PM	Caught a Monomorium queen wondering around today. Most likely M. minimum. Also saw a nuptial flight of Aphaenogaster try to happen around 6:00pm. They didn't get very far from the rain. They were still in a dense cluster of alates near the entrance of the nest as the rain fell and thunder crashed. Posts: 878 07/20/2009 2:49 PM Doc. and Soldier Ant	Add Formica subsericea, F. pallidefulva, Polyergus lucidus to the list of things flying/mating this week. Two weeks ago, I caught a Camponotus decipiens queen who had flown what seemed to me quite late. (I thought May was more typical.). She has a batch of eggs now, so I guess it was a real flight, and not just a sick queen who wandered out disoriented onto the sidewalk. Henchant Posts: 1533 08/01/2009 12:47 AM Henchant	Pogonomyrmex occidentalis has flown very recently. I got a call from a friend asking me what "all of these big red ants with wings were doing rolling around on the ground biting each other in the desert next to highway". It sounded to me like Pogonomyrmex...lekking?...so I went to check it out. I couldn't make it the last couple of miles to the site as it would have required a bike ride on a highway with no shoulder at dusk; instead, I chose the much less suicidal but still identical area next to me to look around: Generic Descriptive Picture And I found of a bunch of these: Blurry picture of the stereotypical Pogonomyrmex claustral cell with crescent mound And even more interesting, three of these: Shaky out of focus video of P. occidentalis queen foraging outside of her cell The video jerks up suddenly because I didn't bring a shovel (as I was expecting to photograph mating ants, not to dig them up) and she was about to disappear down her hole. I also found a dead queen suspended in spider webs above an adult nest. Her body wasn't all hard and crumbly, so I assume she died within a day or two.
