As you can see, I'm well underway with this formicary: my second, ever. It's designed to house Lasius umbratus (which is possibly ambitious) but I imagine that most modestly-sized ants would be happy with it if it doesn't quite work out. It's 6x6x1.5", made of a lovely pumice brick that I bought off eBay. The back and sides are coated with a thin layer of concrete, both to hold the two halves of brick together and to conserve humidity inside the pumice. I always use as much of the brick as I can; the sand left over from digging will fill that crack nicely, floor every chamber, and perhaps block extra chambers altogether. The chambers are not finished and don't even connect yet.
That's about as much detail as I have, at the moment. Now, I would like to know about reservoirs. How easy is it to screw up a reservoir?
I'd be grateful if you would share your favorite type of reservoir. I'm pretty sure I've left enough space for a few options. Do you find that a well works better if it soaks through the porous medium, or is it best when it wicks up behind the glass? Is there another method I don't know about?
Thank you very, very much!
