Aww, you were supposed to convince her insects are awesome. Were you gross out as a young girl?

So at the time she was a bit frightened of the exoskeleton. However, last year she chose to do a big science report on ants and used some of my photos and such. You plant some seeds and hope they take root but like real seeds, and even new queens founding colonies, few actually mature. So, I think we won one with my niece; it just took some time. When I was a kid, I thought most of nature was very interesting. I spent most of my free time outside and never thought anything was really gross (except maybe vomit). I even brought a dead possum home to my mother once. Some people thought I was hyperactive; others said I was a tomboy. My mom, thank goodness, didn't care what others said. For myself, I was just me and I haven't changed much.

Now, you're a cool gal (rare too!). Rock on! My mom/queen hate bugs and made me kept them outside.

I studied spiders and had to make a spider collection. I was living at home at the time. So, the first day I went out to collect spiders, I just went around in the fields and woods near my home. I came back and sat down in the living room, setting the collecting jar full of ethanol and the spider catch, on a coffee table. My mom came in to ask how it had gone. She said: what's in the jar. I said: the spiders I caught. She said: can they get out? I said: No, they're dead. She talked about something else for a minute and then said: Can they get out? I said: No, they're in ethanol; they're dead. She talked about something else for awhile and then said: Can they get out? I said: No, there's a screw top lid. She asked again: Can they get out? I said: I'll take them downstairs. She also is not found of snakes, though she let me keep some for a few months.I don't think my mom hates anything but she isn't too sure of spiders and snakes. When she was a girl, she used to catch lots of spring peepers and let them loose by the handfuls in her house! I gather my grandmother didn't dislike frogs but she wasn't too pleased about having to catch all those tiny ones and get them outside.

I must admit I am not too fond of the roaches. When folks complain about the ants that "invade" their house, I think so why did you build your house on their foraging range?
