Congratulations to you too Jason. Two of my Camponotus floridanus have cocoons, but I guessI am still a couple of weeks out from seeing any Campo-nantics.I broke down today and fed all my queens a tiny bit of honey to celebrate "nantic day". My Camponotus queens reallyseemed to enjoy it.And yes....my wife knows. I rushed to show her in spite of hercracks about my "girlfriends". She tries to hide it, but, she is not very enthusiastic about any of my hobbies.Where I see darling little nantics struggling to make sense of theirtest tube world and wondering what to do.... she sees only "dirty bugs".Sometimes I wonder why I married her.

Jason wrote:We are waaay too alike, BigJohn. I also fed my queen a small dollop of honey to celebrate also! Plus, while I'm not married, my parents also don't see how their son could be so fond of bugs, biology, and the classics but not math or physics or computers (my dad has a doctorate in math). It gets annoying sometimes. They're trying to get me into med school in four years. Sigh...

I missed the "T" by one letter on the keyboard. These cute little nantics are the much maligned Solenopsis Invicta.I am trying to develop some love for this species. So far, it seems to be working. They were downright adorablehiding behind mommy when I fed them a drop of honey.I suspect that by the time I get a few zillion ill-tempered majorsrunning around, they won't be quite so cute.

I would enjoy meeting you. Most young people have no interests other than sex. The fact that youcan get enthusiastic about something as esoteric as myrmecology and turn your interest into expertise sets you apart. Being an ant nerd is a good indicator that you will have a very fun life.In fact, as women get older, they start to appreciate the nerdy guys more and more. I make fun of my wife, but she is a babe and veryintelligent. She is not interested in my hobbies, but she likes thefact that I am interested and enthusiastic about something. Most peopleare drones who go through life without any enthusiasm. We are the "brotherhood of nerds" and we are always excited and interested in something. Most people my age are only interested in lawn maintenance.I stalk my yard with a magnifying glass and test tubes.Your parents want you to be a "success" of course. Medical doctor isa high achievement and it seems to fall near your interests, but you ultimatelyhave to make up your own mind. You are the one who has to do the hardwork to earn the degrees. Doctors seem to work a lot of hours too. If youWANT to do it, I have no doubt that you will excel at it.No matter what profession you go into, you will always be a nerd at heart. You can be a medical doctor with ant farms if you want.
