Posts: 1349 05/27/2011 3:06 PM U.S. Army VeterANT/Soldier	Thanks for posting this, Doctorant. Usually I can identify males only if I spot them in the company of their sisters. For this one, I have a species in mind, but have only found pictures of workers, similarly pale and with similar-looking antennae. Males often have a different color and antenna configurations than workers, so I could be looking at the wrong thing. Still researching. H

Posts: 1349 06/01/2011 4:05 AM U.S. Army VeterANT/Soldier	I will stick with Acropyga for the genus, but the species is not Acropyga epedana. I count 7 antenna segments. Acropyga epedana should have 11 antenna segments. A. smithii has 7 segments and is recorded from southernmost Mexico. H Edited 1 time by Harpegnathos 06/01/2011 4:26 AM.

TAFAMF Addict Posts: 2435 06/01/2011 2:43 PM LibrariANT	I'm not sure, you know North (and partly Middle-) American ants aren't my thing but following the key for known New World queens in LaPolla 2004 I'm undecided for two species: A. smithii and A. exsanguis. On antennal count (7 segments) it will be A. smithii but I'm not totally sure to exclude A. exsanguis (8-9 segments). Bunzli said that workers of A. exsanguis had also 7 segments but LaPolla never saw one worker with 7 segments except, in the New World, in A. smithii. This specimens was collected from leaf litter in Oaxaca, (southern) Mexico. On a related note, while at Ant Course a few years ago, A. epedana flew there at the research station, and Alex Wild (Myrmecos) took this and other photos of them: http://www.alexanderwild....52_E5zDL#630010133_9VCzn Indeed, they do shrivel a lot after they die! Can everyone see the acidopore that characterizes Formicinae on this specimen?

I havent't decided whether to interpret the hairs as a small, upward-pointing acidopore or the upper row of hairs that, in combination with the blurry bit just below it, frame a larger, more directly rearward-pointing acidopore. On this ant, the acidopore opens rearward, and the upper of the hairs surrounding it curve upward. I think we can retire this one in a day or two, then Marek says he has one that would be good...
