TAFAMF Addict Posts: 2435 07/02/2011 10:52 AM LibrariANT	Back to the animal... My guess was wrong but now I have the answer... I started with thinking about a Dolichoderine or a Formicine. I was hoping for the first (Dolichoderus or Frogatella seemed the most probable!) but feared I saw an acidopore and that it would be a Formicine (e.g. Pseudonotoncus). That second photograph proved indeed that it was without any doubt a Formicine. After seeing Mann's publication about ants from Fiji I found that the genus must be Camponotus and from there on I came very quickly to Camponotus (Condylomyrma or now Colobopsis) bryani. And yes, the propodeum and the petiole look very strange and made me think in a few different but wrong directions. For me: C. (C.) bryani for 100%! I was able to access this link to the photo of the ant's gaster. My remark was that it was a very nice and helpful photo taxonomically. But I wondered what my graduate student friends would think if they saw me looking at it. Also, the pictures I have uploaded to not appear to have the problems many others are having.

The locality made me to look to the good starting publication, old but good and the rest was easy... The photos came from AntWeb, and if one guessed the genus Camponotus, one might have found both the first specimen above and the second one whose gaster was conveniently angled toward the camera. MarekB reports he was on hand when Eli Sarnat took the photos. Odd-looking as this ant may be, the Fiji Camponotus page shows several other similar-looking species. Teleutotje: 20 Points Mrmacophyl: 10 Points Thanks to Doctorant for suggesting this NTA, and to AntWeb for this and many other great ant photos. Let's see whether I can have the next NTA ready to go by the time Yuku's image host is back in service. H

Loyal Worker Ant Posts: 598 07/06/2011 8:44 AM	Ah, drat. I knew this one too, because the other image of this ant on Antweb was once under the Anoplolepis gracilipes page, and I notified Antweb of the mistake. Glad to see it's now in its proper place!
