Myrmecos1: Nice photograph attached. I just read its caption for it on www.myrmecos.net/ants/AmbOre7.html ...
Also, I thought you agreed to put this in a single thread (reusing old Myrmecos1 thread for updates)? "We are closer to the ants than to butterflies. That is cool how they just stick their larva right on their pray. Is this done inside the nest or out? It's hard to tell with the white ground.
Great pics. |

Are these ants are pet ants ? . It seems they are not living in natural environment.
Nice pix... |

Thanks guys. These were pet ants for about two weeks, probably the most difficult ants I've ever kept. They are specialist predators and seemed to need about 1-2 centipedes a day. Not just any centipedes either, but Geophilomorph centipedes which aren't so easy to find. I had a tough time keeping them fed and the colony did not last very long. The first photos are of the same colony out in the forest, before I took a fragment of the nest (about 10 queens and 60 workers- these guys have large, sprawling polygynous colonies) into captivity.
Contrary to published reports, they did not bring the larvae to the prey. Rather, they dragged the prey into the brood nest and then moved the larvae only short distances onto the centipede. One thing to note about A. oregonensis. Like the endangered spotted owl, it depends on old-growth forest. With the extensive logging of the pacific coast states, the species may be under considerable threat and its range has diminished significantly. Unfortunately the process of getting a species listed for federal protection is extremely political, especially for invertebrates. Given the outright hostility of the Bush administration towards the protection of our natural resources, it is highly unlikely that we'll be able to do much to protect oregonensis. I've got a much more detailed article about this colony, with more photos, coming out in the next Notes from Underground. Perhaps we can all nag Mrmacophyl until he posts the next issue. antdude- I periodically start new threads when I haven't updated for awhile and the old thread get buried. At 2am it's sometimes easier to just start a new one than go looking through the old threads. But, I can put in more of an effort in the future if you'd like. |

Well, you all know how i feel about that guy. Being an enemy of nature is just one of his many many failings.

Gorgeous, Myrmecos! A nice mid-winter gift for ant-deprived eyes. Thanks
The geophilid-killing and -eating pics are exquisite. A. australis is certainly a robust species. Kinda Mystrium-ish looking. |

Ah, super-cool Myrmecos!!
A. australis was the first Amblyopone I found.... since then I've only found A. pallipes a few times in the midwest... they're very neat ants - wish they were a little more common around here. |

They're not exactly dirt-common around hwere, Moro, but easily turned up with any serious litter sampling. I Also see them a lot in spring, when the surface first warms up, under small logs and rocks.

Amblyopone pallipes is one of the most common ants at my parent's woodlot in upstate New York. They seem to be under nearly every other rock in well-shaded 2nd growth forest. I've been pretty lucky.

Hey all. I've added another small update. There's not much of a theme to this one, just a bunch of pictures that had been piling up on the hard drive over the past few months:

Yeah, I just noticed that too. Should be fixed now. Pretty gross pictures, those dead queen shots.

Yep, and you seem to have an "unhealthy fascination" with it too, what with the two different modes of gross deaths shown

Poor queens. Really hits home just how hard it is to survive the whole swarming, mating, and founding process.
I've probably posted this at some time before, but years ago a big beautiful ]Camponotus queen met her end in my family's living room, after making the mistake of not only finding her way into the house, but crawling across my mother's foot. She got pureed underfoot in a hurry. However, the ants had the last laugh, because there have been thriving Camponotus colonies in an old wood structure on that property ever since. -- AJ |

I love the picture you have at the top of the page, any way you could make it a special backround as when I put it up it blurs a bit. That would be awsome if it isn't to much trouble.
I don't want to be the one Who battles always choose Cuz inside I realize That I'm the one confused I don't know what's worth fighting for Or why I have to scream I don't know why I instigate And say what I don't mean I don't know how I got this way I know it's not alright So I'm breaking the habit I'm breaking the habit tonight -linkin park |

The next www.myrmecos.net update is posted:
www.myrmecos.net/new.html This time around is mostly non-ant insects, but I did get this cool shot of a carpenter ant male that was caught by a predaceous hangingfly: Also, I've made a new wallpaper: ,go here to download the 1024x768 size. As usual, please let me know about any errors, broken links, misidentifications, and so forth. I do have some new ant photos coming, including some Pseudomyrmex, Formica, and Temnothorax. Maybe I'll get around to those later this week. |
