Loyal Worker Ant Posts: 662 03/25/2012 12:39 PM	Yeah I was going to say (oh no please anything but) Camponotus as well. If this is European then I'm currently throwing my lot in with C. aethiops, since it's the only one that's got a pattern of setae similar to this one without also having long hair on the scapes as well. But it still doesn't quite match up, and the concavity at the top of the head still has me stumped...

Loyal Worker Ant Posts: 662 03/28/2012 10:49 AM	Hmmmm...Camponotus socius? The head setae seem to match and the long erect hairs on the mesosoma and the gaster really stand out to me, and I can definitely see lighter stripes against a darker background on the gaster. The shape of the clypeus seems to fit too. I'm still having small problems with the eyes just slightly breaking the face profile and the shape of the head being a little off, but they may be perspective.

The position of the clypeus in the first photo has shifted up in the photo I just found but otherwise it looks mostly the same.

These handsome ants originated in South America, but have established themselves in the southeastern United States. This specimen comes from Fort Gordon, Georgia.
