This is a good question...
A few days ago I reacted on one of the Dutch ant forums (from The Netherlands) because they have an easy quiz but the prizes are 5 ant colonies from G. Kalytta (from Germany). I did just let them know that I won't participate with the quiz because the problems with ant traffic and with G. Kalytta. Now, at this moment, I am called already an irritating guy and it is said I'm frustrated. All they want is that exotic ants must be for sale everywhere and that if science is hampered by escaped colonies from ant-keepers, then scientists should import ant colonies from other countries to investigate. All those ant shops online are doing good work according to them. And what happens to the ants if they escape or are put in nature after the owners get bored? Can you control the winners of the quiz? I asked... The answer was funny: If you say you can control them (the winners), I can, if you say you can't control them,... I can't. And when I said that the prize-colonies had to cross a border (between Germany and The Netherlands) and that in the U.S.A. it was forbidden to transport live queens across borders, I got the answer that living queens can cross borders on their nuptial flights. Now you have to know that the prize-colonies belong to species not native to The Netherlands...
One even said that as longs as it wasn't a species like Paraponera clavata that would escape, there will be no problem at all...
Why are there so many ant-"lovers" that are against some regulations about ant traffic and ant smuggling???? And why can't some people see that they are doing more wrong than good???
One small thing about their quiz: They thought that if they restricted the access to the quiz nobody would find it to criticize. Sadly for them, I'm a member of their forum... (at least, still at this moment that I write this...).
