I water in the afternoons when we normally get rain here to simulate a natural environment and I don't provide any extra heat. We've had a heat wave this whole summer and it's been ridiculously hot.

Loyal Worker Ant Posts: 683 07/30/2012 5:46 PM	Attempting to simulate the outdoors doesn't really work in captivity. There is far more sand and dirt and it's far more densely packed than what you have in your container which will lower it's water retention as well as make water evaporate easier - unless it's air tight, I suppose. You're just better off leaving a wet cotton ball in a bottle cap on the surface or something to provide constant humidity and a drinking source, in my opinion. Major Worker Ant Posts: 330 08/02/2012 5:47 PM	One word: Mold. It started on the surface of the sand, I treated it with baking soda water which worked very well by the way(Thank you Anergates)! But then it started appearing in her tunnels where I can't get the baking soda water... The question: Should I see how things turn out? Build a new formicarium and work out a way to transfer her and her brood? I'm having a bad day .

Major Worker Ant Posts: 330 08/08/2012 8:21 PM	Yeah haven't updated in awhile. Moved my girl out of her formicarium and into a test-tube and small out world. Since moving now all three larvae are now pupae(Three in total), and she has a small clutch of new eggs. On the flip side she refuses to eat anything, but doesn't seem too thin I suppose...

Major Worker Ant Posts: 330 08/12/2012 8:57 PM	Well I'm trying to keep the updates coming despite the lack of interaction . My beautiful Etta has her three pupae still, one is darkening quite a bit! She has been laying new rounds of eggs and has a couple small larvae. Today Etta broke her hunger strike and ate some honey, I'm really getting excited!!!

I haven't had the money to buy a new digital camera. If my phone could take pictures with enough resolution to see anything I'd do it! Plus right now she's in a test tube waiting for me to complete her formicarium. I'll be picking up plaster to build her nest Friday after I get paid. Her one darkening pupa is the light orange of a callow so I'm expecting her to be walking around any day now! Switched out her honey for a wet oat that she'll hopefully get down on tonight. She still refuses any proteins...
