For most ant species, the most dangerous enemy is other ants. Powerful jaws, chemical sprays, and contact poisons are good weapons against other ants. These weapons are less effective against larger enemies, such as mammals. Pogonomyrmex stings seem to be optimized against rodents, which do not prey on the ants themselves, but would love to raid the seed stores that Pogonomyrmex gather. The seeds are the gold in the Pogos' Fort Knox, and must be defended.

I got the impression from The Earth Dwellers by Erich Hoyt that the sting of Paraponera clavata is not efficacious against anteaters, but I bet the monkeys don't mess with this arboreal forager.
