Today was sunny and reasonably warm, and we have had a little bit of recent rain, so I went out to Morgan Territory Regional Preserve to see what ants I could find.
On a sunny knoll among some large rocks I found Formica ants that may have been relocating their nest.
I lifted a rock and saw an ant scurry into a crevice. I dug a little with my trowel and found a Messor andrei colony. After I took photos I replaced the rock and some of the displaced soil.
I also found another species, but I'll put it up as a Name that Ant challenge instead of posting here.
