Casts Reveal Architecture:Castle, Plaster, & Tschinkel |
Lead | ||
|
I was reading an article on AntColony Web site ( www.antcolony.org/news/Ca...ecture.htm ) about a guy (Walter Tschinkel) pouring dental plaster into ant nests. Wow, I would love to see those close-ups! The detailed article is on abcnews.go.com/sections/s...12501.html ...

The entire colony is probably encased in that plaster.

neat. Thanks for pointing out the article.
The 1988 book, Advances in Myrmecology, edited by Dr. Ant also has a really neat article about plaster casts of nests. |

Well now we know how to design our plaster nests right?
I tink that is amazing and definatly does show some almost mathmatical thinking. Stuff like this might be used if the world ever needed to hide underground from comits or nuclear winters of some sort. I hope they can get plaster molds of other ant nests as well. Discover that maybe ants dig deeper than we think. What might look like a small colony outside might be a huge labrinth underground going down meters. Bismark the Myrmoteras,

Yep, I always wonder how ants can remember where everything is. Like where the queen is. Where's the food storage is.
