I made some modifications to the Formicinae page and wrote an introduction for the Ponerinae (introducing Bolton's concept of the poneromorph subfamilies and discussing their presumed primitiveness). Loyal Worker Ant Posts: 567 03/20/2004 9:58 PM Doc.	Aren't the Formiciinae an extinct subfamily (not to be confused with Formicinae)? I have got to learn about contributing to Wikipedia. I'd love to do an entry about sex determination in Hymenoptera. The male-haploid/female-diploid model is generally true, but there are underlying mechanisms that result in exceptions. That's an area ripe for further study in ants, BTW; lots of work on inbreeding-related diploid male production has been done in wasps and bees, but diploid males are also known to occur in numerous ant species. They probably have quite a bit of impact on, for example, Solenopsis invicta colony structure. Cool stuff! The Ant has made himself [sic] illustrious/Through constant industry industrious/So what? Formiciinae, containing a single genus Formicium, is indeed an extinct subfamily, known only from fossils of alates, and of uncertain relationship to the rest of Formicidae. The females are the largest ants known to have existed. (I didn't write anything about Formiciinae at Wikipedia, and will probably leave the fossil ants to someone else, in general. Somehow, if there's no possibility of seeing it alive, or at least as an intact specimen, it's not as interesting too me.)

The genus Formicium includes at this moment 5 species and is known only from queens and males . Workers were never found . The wingspan of the sexuals is the biggest among ants ( Extant and extinct combined . ) ever found . The queens have a maximum wingspan of 13 to 15 cm. Real giants ( One of the species is called F. giganteum . ) ! Two of the species are known from queens and males ( Both from an Eocene deposit in Messel , Germany . ) and the others are only known from isolated wings ( Great Britain and U.S.A. ) .
