One week ago I retrieved a Cephalotes varians queen from a hollowed sea-grape twig while vacationing in Key West, and put her in a typical test tube setup. It seemed to suit her, though I noticed that she was able to climb up the sides and on the "ceiling" of the tube. But I had a bit of a crisis today - apparently, these ants are turtle-like in more than just appearance! The poor ant had fallen from the top and become stuck on her back, unable to right herself. She seems to be okay, and I have smeared Vaseline along the sides of the test tube in hopes that it will discourage her from climbing again. I also ordered a growth chamber from Tar Heel Ants. However, I am curious if anybody on these forums has successfully kept queens of this genus and if so, what sort of setup did you use? Thanks in advance!
