im not a myrmecologist. i just have noticed something strange with the ants in my back yard. as far as i know you have 2 types of ant beds, the mound type and the typical single hole with the dirt piled around it . now the mound type i have 1 in my back yard that is well if ya held your arms out in front to make a circle touching the tips of your fingers its about that big around and i would say above ground is about 4 to 6 inches deep ( big if ya ask me lol) these mounds are typical for the sothern fire ants here in usa. well what i find strange is the single hole beds in my yard where you expect non stinging black or red ants are actualy fire ant beds has anyone ever seen this before? im 53 and have always paid attention to these things as i like to be part of the earth you know lay down in the grass crawl under the car to fix it relax iunder a shade tree exc exc. so now is it strang behavior for fire ants to make the typical single hole nest instead of the multiple hole mounds????? i dont know where else to ask.
