China Ant: Nice photographs!!
Your ezboard image ( insect.euage.com/bbs/uplo...877381.jpg ) doesn't work. "The men of experiment are like the ant; they only collect and use. But the bee...gathers its materials from the flowers of the garden and of the field, but transforms and digests it by a power of its own." --Leonardo da Vinci /\___/\ / /\ /\ \ Ant (aka AntDude), Your Host & Fearless Overlord| |o o| | \ _ / The Ant Farm's Message Board and Ant's Quality Foraged Links (AQFL). VEry interesting ant, China Ant. I suggest we make this our Name that Ant #74 and get all our best minds involved in the question. If that's okay with you, Myrmacophyl, AntDude or I can move it there.

Yes, Nugi, they are Tetramorium-ish. T. obtusidens from Dr. Pfeiffer's site is reminiscent antbase.de/ebene1/tetramo...ns-xx.html

Re: ? | #8 | ||

I would exclude Myrmica because of wing venation- they have cubital cell divided in part by cubital vein and radial cell open. What about Paratopula? As far as can be seen, venation seems to fit very well and also that slender silhouette... However, I'm not sure if it matches any of described species (are there records of Paratopula from China??) It would be most helpful to know palpal count

This is a pdf of the page on which Paratopula wing venation is illustrated in Bolton's 1988 revision of this genus: atbi.biosci.ohio-state.ed...7&page=132 .
Bolton did not see any Chinese specimens in the course of his study. The ants of southern China are not well collected, but the affinities of the tropical Chinese fauna are clearly with the rest of tropical Asia. [added a few days later...] BTW, I have written to a Chinese ant specialist I know to ask if he'd take a look at this. We'll see... |

I just sent this question to a Japanese Asian myrmecologist.
It does look like Paratopula. The ant I found in my house was Tetramorium, which is not as elongated as this. But the key characters are too obscure in the pics. |

Email reply from Yamane san:
~~~~~ Dear Budi san, Thank you for your mail. The ant looks like Paratopula and I will compare your pictures with my specimens. Please wait a little. By the way, Eguchi and Syaukani have come back from Sumbawa? All of you were not involved in the disaster (earthquake)? Best regards, Sk. Yamane ~~~~~ Anyway, we're unaffected from the earthquake. |
This was a fun NTA, although we never got a 100% firm Identification on it. Next NTA shortly.
Sorry no reply from Yamane san. It's already too long time, I don't expect more response. Some frictions happened. E-mail him directly if you wish. The address is in antbase.org directory.
A late-breaking bulletin:
I just got this from a Chinese ant taxonomist colleaugue, regarding the identity of these pictures -- Paratopula indeed! I returned from the field work the day before yesterday. I also received photoes from "China Ant". I have an identification of the ant this morning, it is a Paratopula species. But I do not know the species name at present time. Best regards, XU Zhenghui [Temporarily moving this back to general - Dr. Ant] |
