Henchant Posts: 1551 09/04/2005 2:50 PM Strong Worker Ant	I have fire ants in a small container with an air tight lid and they can't escape. Only problem is, its too small for them. I bought a 10 gallon tank (Silicon (sorry if thats spelled wrong) glue on the corners, so I can't put any slippery substances on it because it won't work.) Anyone have any idea of what I can use so my fire ants don't escape everywhere? I was thinking of a heavy piece of hard plastic, but I dont know a single plastic supply store in San Diego or Del mar (USA, Southern CA) I live in Del Mar and don't want to travel too far to get plastic. I know of one in Orange County, but its too far. Thanks for any ideas

Like just put a large tubberware lid under it and when you put the cage on top, fill it with enough water so the ants wont walk across it. Just be careful that they don't build a dirt bridge across it. You should make it kind of deep, like 1 inch so they can't make a bridge. The deeper the better. chazzbo77

TAFMF Addict Posts: 3223 09/04/2005 3:45 PM	Perhaps some place sells sheets of Plexy Glass and they could cut it to the inner rim of the cage for you. Then simply glue a handle to it or drill one in place. It can be hard to find in stores because the covering that protects it makes it appear like a sheet of card board. You may need to ask for help finding it.

If not then you should try looking at pet stores for glass lids. I know they sell them as I am trying to get one so I don't bother my harvesters everytime I accidently breath on them(even the slightest breath makes them go crazy). Or just go to lowes and have them cut the right size plexi glass you need. I don't know what you will do for air though. If the lid is all you are depending on then I wouldn't suggest lifing it to let air in. Also with the oil on the very top rim their is no silicon and the ants will have a harder time getting over it and placing sand on it. You would have to be very careful about clearing the bodies since they can make a bridge. Posts: 86 09/04/2005 7:53 PM Minor Worker Ant	I use butter (margarine) around the top. Works very well and doesn't drip down. Why would that not work on silicone? Home depot sells sheets of hard plastic. You can cut it and make if fit anything. Put a little weight ontop and it should seal fine.
