1. Formica nitidiventris from queen captured July 2000 in northwest Illinois. 150-200 workers.
2. F. nitidiventris incipient colony from a queen collected July 2001. 3. F. nitidiventris incipient colony from queen collected three weeks ago (20 July 2002). She already has 8 cocoons and a small pile of eggs, without supplementary food!
4. F. subsericea incipient colony from queen collected a few days after #3. Only eggs and small larvae accompany her.
5a and 5b. Two incipient colonies of Formica limata (?) from queens captured near Estes Park Colorado last July. (See at #2 above for numbers.)
6. F. pergandei with F. nitidiventris slaves. Incipient colony with 4 queens, about 20 F. pergandei workers, about 50 F. nitidiventris and about 10 F. incerta collected last September. F. incerta were killed off within a few weeks after capture. Little growth in this colony, as F. nitidiventris keep killing off new arrivals from F. nitidiventris pupae I've added to the colony, and kill some of the new F. pergandei workers as they emerge, too.
7. Camponotus pennsylvanicus colony from queen collected May 2001. About 25 workers, including the first medium-size worker which emerged last week.
8. C. chromaoides incipient colony from a queen collected May 2002. Two workers and a small amount of brood.
9. Tetramorium caespitum incipient colony from two queens collected in Longmont Colorado July 2001. One queen killed by the other when first workers emerged at the end of summer 2001. 25 or so small workers and a healthy pile of brood.
