Small camera to observe ants? |
Lead | ||
|
I have about 300 dollars and would like to invest in a small camera that can fit in a test tube and observe ants up close without disturbing the queen. The problem I have right now is that the queen and her brood are in the test tube set up and I cannot see what they are doing because of course the test tube is covered in black construction paper. The set up looks like this:

Maybe one of those tube cameras used by doctors to view internal organs? I am not sure if those can see tiny things like ants. They're probably cost way more.
Also, thread moved to anting and keeping ants forums. I used some fibre optics to watch an ant colony inside the domatia of a Humboldtia sp, which was definitely narrower than a small test tube. It worked like a gem. I cant recollect how expensive it was though :-(

You probably won't have much luck with only $300. Although, you can get a digital camcorder for around $400, they take video and photos. They have excellent macro focus, up to 2 mm (I'm estimating from my Canon ZR600). Also, when its semi dark (like just after sunset), most newer camcorders can compensate very well when taking video.
It won't fit in the test tube but it can get extremely close, mounted or not. |

I'd recommend using tin foil to cover the test tubes; its easy to slide on and off and is good in a pinch or hectic situation such as catching a queen.
