Adult Worker Ant Posts: 219 04/04/2004 4:15 PM	I'm really shocked by these works made by Dra Reznikova, from Russia. They show that some ant species have numerical abilities, and some kind of simbolic language far more elaborated than bees, for example. reznikova.net/ I'd appreciate any comments. I'll want to say more about this subject later but note that she has done some work on Myrmica the current GW. Please contribute this week anything you might like tosay about this genus at the GW thread (You all know where it is.). I'll be taking it down after next Friday.

I tried the following one, which is online on her home page: reznikova.net/Publications.html Zhanna Reznikova, Boris Ryabko, A STUDY OF ANTS' NUMERICAL COMPETENCE Electronic Transactions on Artificial Intelligence Issue: Vol. 5(2001): Section B: pp. 111-126 It reads quite convincing, however, I ask myself whether such capabilities would be of any relevance to ants. The natural world only rarely consists of straight and even paths and rectangular junctions. And to learn or even communicate the path of an ant from the nest to, let's say, an aphid colony high up a tree with many branches and leafs and numerous junctions with diverse angles ..... I question that this is feasible. And for Formica polyctena, the species studied by Reznikova, the use of pheromone marked trails is well known (though pheromone trails were thoroughly excluded in the experiments!). Who can help to interpret these experiments? A. Buschinger

It's quite a change in my particular view of understanding the "ant way of life", and huge changes requires huge facts. But it's a good beginning. Perhaps some people with more mathematical background can discover any tricks in there, but I couldn't. The most amazing fact to me was that they could change the code of transmission. It seems pretty amazing and shows a flexibility that I think no other species but us have. I'm still trying to asimilate it.
