Adult Worker Ant Posts: 284 03/03/2006 11:04 AM Adult Worker Ant	I need to understand old papers of foreign languages, e.g. German, French, Italian, Russian, etc. These paper were written by Forel, Emery, Karavaiev, Mayr, Santschi. They studied Indo-Australian ants which I'm studying now. There are also more recent papers written in those language, e.g. Baroni Urbani (Calyptomyrmex), Fromantin & Souli (Crematogaster). The papers were mostly from antbase.org. I want to learn the languages, but for now I can't. I tried to retype a paper and have Language Tools translate it, but this would take forever to finish. Pdfs from antbase.org are in a form in which the characters are unrecognized digitally so I can't copy and paste directly. Any suggestions are welcomed.

TAFMF Addict Posts: 2115 03/03/2006 11:34 AM Leaf-Cutter	run those PDFs through an OCR software, correct mistakes, then send it off for translation. There are tons of translation companies out there (although some are fairly expensive)

However, that is in English only as far as I know (AFAIK). Last year I searched for free OCR software but turned up trial software with limited use and I thought I had to print and re-scan the papers. Now I look up for "OCR software". I found the freeware www.simpleocr.com/ and I hope this works. For translation I think I'll use translator software. This list project is fundless (though important) so I have to make full use of free services.

Posts: 5364 03/05/2006 2:52 PM Doc.	OCR software is an imperfect tool. I tried to convert a pdf of my Paratrechina paper to text and it is going to require literally thousands of little corrections to get it into a readable state. I hear from Agosti that he is plannign to OCR everything he can, so it might be worth contacting him...

I made the words in the OCR-ed papers match the original ones, but somehow the words weren't recognized by the translator program. These are the results Forel 1909, Forel 1905 Why? + Is recent German words differ much from ones in th 1900s? + Is it because of mispelling of the words? I did find mispellings (I don't have dictionary to correct them) and with due respect, Dr Forel mispelled Crematogaster there (no spellchecker in 1900s). + Is it because of they were unpopular scientific terms? Some untranslated words were: Kiefer, beobachtet, stirnleisten, gerandet, stielchen, fehlend, hinterrand, Gespinnststuecke, eingesponnen, kummern, anzuheften. - Forel, A. 1909.
