Acanthomyops is in the subfamily Formicinae, with Camponotus, Formica, Lasius, etc. They all have extremely reduced / absent stingers (they can't sting) but they do have "acidopores". Some of these ants can squirt formic acid out of their acidopores - it is very pungent and would be irritating if it was squirted in your eyes or mouth (so if you were a predator trying to eat the ant you might stop). I have seen a Camponotus noveboracensis soldier squirt a stream of formic acid at me 10-15 cm. All of the Acanthomyops I have seen are very timid though and in fact you typically won't find them unless you turn over rocks or rotten logs because they only come aboveground during their nuptial flight.
