At certain times i have boosted a colony with the eggs and larva of a different colony and they have adopted them, as far as adult ants, i have had little success. I am guessing your trying this with Pogonomyrmex from your previous posts.

Pogonomyrmex isn't known for being a multiple queen colony but i have experiemented with queens captured during mating flights, i would put 2 queens together and they would rear their young together as well, usually but not always ther workers will eventually choose a dominent queen and kill the other. I don't think you could ever remove colony scent, but rather change it or diversify it. I think it has a lot to do with isolation as well. It would be awesome to see if taking a random queen from an Argentine ant colony who are believed to share a common scent throughout CA. with little or no diversity at all and isolate her to force her to raise her own colony, perhaps she would become independant and with it have her own scent. Diversifying the Argentine ants scent would definitely weaken their invasive dominane over native ant species.

As far as pogonomyrmex, most of their colonies are very small numbering in the high 100's when mature. Id have to experiement myself to see what would happen so i could give you some info and first hand knowedge.

Isolating the oil or gland that makes the scent change or identity may be difficult. Ants have an extreme sense of smell, they have scent identity for everything. If youw ere to simple rub the queen ant of one colony with a q tip for example and then smir this q-tip onto the surface near another ant colony they would definately react. I've always wondered if we can duplicate this in a liquid form of some sort.
