Bolton was the author in 02 ) . Lots of SEM photographs ! 04) An overview of ant systematics and a catalogue of all the names of ants published until that moment . 05) An updated version of the genus-names and higher classification of ants , published in 04 , but more clearly presented . The book also includes a new key to subfamilies , definitions of the family , subfamilies and tribes and four appendixes . 06) The encyclopedia of ants before B. Hlldobler and E. O. Wilson 's " The Ants" . A lot of spectacular drawings and very good ! 07) A bibliography of all systematic texts on ants ! Now you can find a complete bibliography of ants in FORMIS ( cmave.usda.ufl.edu/~formis/ ) but still good as a book at hand if your computer is out of reach ! 08) Very good ! If you want to study the distribution of ants , regional ant-fauna's , ant ecology , ..... read this first ! It contains overviews of ground living ants , ants in general , techniques and sources ! 09) A very deep going book on the theoretical aspects on queen number , matings , conflicts between casts , dispersion strategies , ..... 10) and 11) Good German introductions ( They were launched as study-texts ) , and , like I already said , the second edition contains a few very good updates on " The Ants " . TAFMF Addict Posts: 2006 07/23/2002 4:27 AM LibrariANT	A little note : Myrmecology is a science and , like we all know , science evolves , new things are found , new theories are put under the scrutiny of more refined experiments , ..... So , myrmecology also develops . If you want to know the changes in systematics of ants , new behavioral facts , ... you will have to read articles and " roam " the Internet until someone publishes a new general review . I wish you all good search- and reading-behavior and a lot of pleasure with the observation of ants AND , we aren't allowed to forget , let us all have lots of ant-fun and ant-discussions on the Ant Farm ! Taylor and other Australians published in this journal ) * Behavior ( You have to search the ant articles between the other articles ) * Biological Bulletin ( Woods Hole ) ( Just after 1900 a series of articles from mostly W. M. Wheeler , now only marine biology ! ) * Biologishes Centralblatt ( In the first part of the twentieth century very important , most in German , also a part in English ! ) * Bulletin et Annales de la Societe Entomologique Belge ( Very good around 1900 , lots of articles from Forel , Emery , Santschi and others ) * Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History ( Some very nice articles from T. C. Schneirla on Army Ants ! ) * Bulletin of the British Museum of Natural History ( Entomology ) ( One of the greatest for ants , especially on account of B. If you help the list would be in no time almost complete and anyone interested can search those journals then ! Posts: 5364 07/27/2002 10:06 AM Doc.	Ant articles are occasionally pblished in many other journals, but your list includes the main ones with myrmecological content. I believe Pshyche is "in stasis" right now, as it has been for several years. It would not surprise me if it were revived some year in the future (but I'm not holding my breath).

Very good review of ant defense mechanisms . 7) If you can find it : Read it ! Very good on why social insects are successful in geological time and dominant in nature ! I find it a must for anybody who gets the chance to read it . Appeared in the same year as " The Ants " ! One remark if you want to order this book at your bookstore : It has an ISSN-number and not an ISBN-number ! 08) This book is a good review of the concept of the superorganism. It is a worked out version of a chapter in 07. With this book, a "grand tour of books" though the lives of social insects is finished. Starting with "The Insect Societies" and "Success and Dominance in Ecosystems: The Case of the Social Insects", about social insects in general, then on with "The Ants" and "Journey to the Ants: A Story of Scientific Exploration" for the main field of our interest and ending with "The Superorganism. The Beauty, Elegance, and Strangeness of Insect Societies" as a general conclusion of what social insects are and why. This book is a must for everybody and a worthy ending of this tour of social insects. There are a lot more books on social insects but these give already a good general view ! I can add a few titles to my Post 160 but most of them 1) aren't for sale any more and can be found only in shops where they sell very old books , or 2) are printed once and only on a very limited amount of copies and are now not available any more . Regularly new once come out and when one or the other deserves to be included it will appear on the list . Teleutotje
