Young Worker Ant Posts: 66 01/30/2004 6:53 PM Adult Worker Ant	Hi I appreciate that there are many professional myrmecologists, as well as amateur ant keepers (and of course those in between!), who frequent this board. I would be very interested in hearing what you consider your most fulfilling ant experiences. Fulfilling is a good "catch all" word - so I guess any experience that sticks in your mind as particularly satisfying, or something that you were very proud of or happy with. Doesn't have to be unusual! I would start the ball rolling, but my ant experiences are somewhat limited

Watching a swarm of Argentine ants crawling out from the ground in my backyard because I was watering the lawn. Then, they climbed onto the patio and up the wall. My father killed them with a bug killer spray. Posts: 5364 01/31/2004 8:58 PM Doc.	Wow! This is a hard question for one who has been observing ants for over 40 years. I guess I'd have to say it was during my first trip to the tropics, namely to Belize, in Central America. It was there that I first encountered many kinds of ants that I had read about, but never seen alive -- Acacia-inhabiting Pseudomyrmex, raiding army ants (Eciton hamatum, and leaf-cutter ants (Atta and Acromyrmex species. It was a wonderful trip for a budding myrmecologist (working on my undergraduate biology degree at the time). I saw many more species and interesting behaviors on later trips to the tropics, but this first one was certainly the most exciting.

Posts: 1 02/01/2004 9:07 AM	I was in Australia on holiday with family, every morning I would be up at daybreak and spens a few hours cooling in the pool after a hot night, just sitting reading and drinking coffee. First though i would clear the pool of the various insects that had drowned in the pool overnight, I would make a small mound of them in the middle of an ant run then watch the ants clear up the debris and cart off all the body parts to whereever they lived to consume them, it took them a couple of hours but not a scrap was left.

TAFAMF Addict Posts: 2841 06/22/2006 5:17 PM	I don't have any super big ones, but I am watching a fight between Imported fire ants and Argentine ants. That is extremely cool. Although the Fire ants are being attacked in different fronts, they overtook one Argentine ant nest, possibly two now. Although they were small, it still counts :P I plan on taking video of it too.

Posts: 1350 06/22/2006 6:49 PM U.S. Army VeterANT/Soldier	I gave a presentation on ants for an elementary school class. I brought in my microscopes and ant specimens from Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and America. We went over Linnaean classification (King Philip Came Over From Greece Singing). I had some simplified identification keys (to subfamilies) and let the kids identify a Ponerine and a Formicinae. Most got it right. H

Posts: 1350 06/23/2006 3:49 AM U.S. Army VeterANT/Soldier	Overlord: I didn't have any live ants. I didn't have an ant farm to show the kids because I don't keep live ants. I tried once to keep a Camponotus socius colony, but they all died. Anyway the nomadic Army lifestyle doesn't support keeping live ants. In Georgia I could watch Pogos and other species all day if I walked to the field behind my house. The school was in Georgia, and the schoolkids saw live fire ants every day, like it or not. H
