This ant occurs across the northern half of the USA and possibly in southern Canada. It seems to require relatively pristine woodland-grassland edge or open
woodland habitats. It is nowhere common, so is not often encountered. I have observed three localized Missouri populations of this species apparently go
extinct during my 20 plus years here, and have encountered only a couple of others. The experience of fellow ant experts, in states ranging from Massachusetts
to California is much like mine here. This is a species that might deserve "of conservation concern" or endangered status.
