I was just thinking it would be cool to catch your own colonies nuptial flight on video. hawaii is inundated with Pheidole megacephala. one more nuptial flight won't make any difference. went to kauai as well in 1988 and this species was EVERYWHERE, even up to the beaches. it was amazing. i hate to say it, but Pheidole is one of my fav ants, and P. megacephala is very interesting because of its capacity to just dominate the environment.

They aren't nearly as big of a colony as your though. I think it's time for an update! Owner of 1 duck, 5 chickens, 1 dog, 2 budgies and their offspring, 2 finches, lizards, and ants. Current ant colonies/founding queens - Solenosis invicta - Dorymyrmex bureni - Pheidole flavens - Pheidole dentata - Pheidole morrisii - Pheidole megacephala - Tetramorium bicarinatum - Camponontus floridanus - Camponotus tortuganus

The queens are typically unrealated and are often pulled into smaller nests by workers after nuptial flights from other colonies. From there on the colony can produce more alates which would mate inside the nest to increase the queen count for the main nest, and some alates for a nuptail flight so the colony can spread it's genetics. Starting the cycle all over again! That's what I believe at least. Owner of 1 duck, 5 chickens, 1 dog, 2 budgies and their offspring, 2 finches, lizards, and ants. Minor Worker Ant Posts: 86 05/28/2010 5:13 PM	dude... epic journal.. your tank set up is inspiring to say the least.. definatly got my gears working, i got a medium sized tank at home.. more long then tall, (which is even better) but i know if ants escape in my apartment, my gf would kill me haha
